I have the 351w with an fmx and 164 tooth flywheel. The starter is the same. on the older fords from atleast 60 to 75 and probubly longer., all the starters are identical 6 and 8 cylinder, but they have 4 different nose plates, long 2 bolt,long 3 bolt, short 2bolt and short 3 bolt. You can swap the nose pieces on all of them I have ever had. of C4-to-AOD swaps which are similar. Also a friend has done the FMX-to-AOD swap. The C4-to-AOD swap required a custom transmission crossmember but we were able to modify the FMX mount. See if you can find a good rebuilder in your area if you don't want to tackle it yourself. hy guys, i'm restoring my 1970 mustang with 351c engine and fmx transmission, it stops to run in every gear i try so i've dissasembled the transmission case an d i've found the oil pump broken, but the problem is that the modulator rod is absent, so i cant go on with the rebuilding work.

There is little if any interchangeability of between flexplates that fit C4, C6, and FMX transmissions and flexplates that fit the AOD. The C-4 is lighter, easier and cheaper to rebuild without problems. If they are working ok they both do alright but if I was starting from scratch and setting up for something it would be a C-4. FMX is an old-style design transmission, C-4 is modern-style and less problematic in the long run. I would rather rebuild 2 C-4s than one FMX.

Apr 09, 1998 · In stock trim, an FMX is definitely a stronger box. It's basically a truck transmission. It's also heavier, with it's cast-iron main case. The biggest problem with an FMX is it's lack of aftermarket support. You can buy parts to beef up a C4 to make it capable of 9-second drag strip duty, but for the FMX there's little or nuthin available.. The picture below shows 4 flexplates, the two on the top step are the ones I pulled from the Ranchero and the Cougar. Ranchero with C4 on the left and Cougar with C6 on the right. A stock AOD will also handle more hp then a stock C4. The downsides to using an AOD are you will need a shorter driveshaft, an AOD specific transmission mount and an assortment of other parts for the swap. The other major issue with running an AOD is getting the line pressure set correctly with a TV cable. From a V-8 performance standpoint, there are really only two transmissions to consider - the C4 and the C6.
